Who we are
The largest trade group in the EU-Brussels community, the European Chemical Industry Council, or Cefic, is the voice of 29,000 large-, medium- and small-sized chemical companies in Europe, which provide 1.2 million jobs and account for 21 per cent of world chemicals production. Founded in 1972 and headquartered in Brussels ever since, Cefic represents its members and interacts daily on their behalf with international and EU institutions, non-governmental organizations, the international media and other stakeholders.
Operational management of Cefic is ensured by a leadership team at its headquarters in Brussels. Led by the director general, the 11-member team includes executive directors representing programmes and industry sectors.

Statutory bodies
The Cefic board and executive committee are in charge of governance and strategic positioning. They are elected by the general assembly for a two-year period.
The National Association Board and the Industry Sector Board ensure the direct involvement of national associations’ and industry sectors’ leaders in the operational management of Cefic.
Cefic headquarters
The team ensure that the trade group operates as a single entity in its corporate and business activities and services, working with national associations and industry sectors to define priorities and policies, working structures and advocacy plans.
In addition to work of the leadership team, the office of the director general addresses business development, member relations, the Responsible Care initiative and international affairs. The office actively leads Cefic participation in ICCA – the International Council of Chemical Associations.
