R phrases
Risk phrases.A set of numbered standard sentences which appear on user labels for packaged goods (e.g. R23: toxic by inhalation).(EEC/EU usage).
R&D
Research and Development.
R&I
Research and Innovation (Programme of Cefic).
RA
Risk assessment is the process that evaluates the risk relative to the assessment endpoint as a result of exposure to one or more chemicals. The components include hazard identification , dose-response assessment , exposure assessment and risk characterisation.
RBT
Ready Biodegradability Test.
RC
See Responsible Care (RC).
RCF
Regenerated Cellulose Film.
RCLG
Responsible Care Leadership Group (working group belonging to ICCA).
RCP
Reciprocal Calculation Procedure.
RCR
See Risk Characterisation Ratio (RCR).
RCRA
Resource, Conservation and Recovery Act (USA).
RDA
Recommended Daily Allowance.
REACH
Regulation EC N° 1907/2006 of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH); New chemicals policy formerly described in the EU White Paper - " Strategy for a future Chemicals Policy". REACH officially entered into force on 1 June 2007.
REACH IT
REACH (Regulation) Information Technology. The objective of REACH-IT projects is to ensure that the REACH processes in the Agency, the Member States Competent Authorities (MS CAs), the industry, the Commission and other affected stakeholders are supported (and partially enabled) by (an) appropriate IT system(s) and coresponding interfaces.
reactivity
The tendency of a substance to undergo a chemical change with the release of energy. Undesirable effects (pressure build-up, temperature increase, formation of noxious, toxic or corrosive by-products) may occur because of a reaction to heating, burning, direct contact with other materials or other conditions when in use or in storage.
receptor
A tissue or cell which is sensitive to a specific stimulus.
RECOUP
Recycling of Used Plastics Ltd.
recycling
A practice which regenerates or processes a material from a process to recover a useable product or material for reuse.
reducing agent
The material which is oxidised or which allows easy oxidation.
refining
Conversion of crude oil into useful products, such as naphtha, the most important feedstock for the petrochemical industry. Every refinery begins with the separation of crude oil into different fractions by distillation. The fractions are further treated to convert them into mixtures of more useful products by various methods such as cracking, reforming, alkylation, polymerisation and isomerisation. These mixtures of new compounds are then separated using methods such as fractionation and solvent extraction.
