HACCP
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point.
HACI
Hellenic Association of Chemical Industries.
HARRPA
Hydrocarbon and Rosin Resins Producers Association. more
HASAWA
Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974.
hazard
The hazard associated with a chemical is its intrinsic ability to cause an adverse effect. It should be compared to risk, which is the chance that such effects will occur. Whilst a chemical may have hazardous properties, provided it is handled safely under contained conditions, any risk to human health or the environment is extremely low.
hazard assessment
Hazard identification and establishment of dose-response relationship for observed adverse effects in the specified (eco)toxicological endpoints.
hazard identification
Identification of the adverse effects which a substance has an inherent capacity to cause.
hazard warning
Any words, pictures, symbols, or combination thereof appearing on a label or other appropriate form of warning which convey the hazards of the chemical(s) in the container(s).
Hazardous and Noxious Substances Convention
(HNS Convention)
Convention drawn up by the International Maritime Organisation in May 1996. The two-tier convention provides compensation for loss or damage resulting from pollution, fire or explosion threatened or caused by hazardous and noxious substances. The convention introduces strict liability of the shipowner and a system of compulsory insurance and insurance certificates. This first tier is supplemented by a second tier, the HNS Fund, financed by cargo interests.
hazardous chemical
Any chemical which is a physical, health or environmental hazard.
HAZOP
Hazard and Operability Study.
HCFC
Hydrochlorofluorocarbon.
HCl
See hydrochloric acid (HCl).
HCN
Hydrogen cyanide.
HCS
Hazard Communication Standards (USA).
HDPE
See high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
health hazard
A chemical for which there is statistically significant evidence based on at least one study conducted in accordance with established scientific principles that acute or chronic health effects may occur in exposed employees.
HEDSET
Harmonised Electronic Data Set. The European Council Regulation (EEC) 793/93 requires producers and importers of chemical substances to submit to the European Commission data concerning a number of chemicals, if the production or import volume exceeds certain limits. This serves to evaluate and control the risks of existing substances. The data must be supplied on computer readable diskettes written with the HEDSET, or Harmonised Electronic Data Set, program.
HERA
Human and Environmental Risk Assessments on ingredients of household cleaning products. A voluntary industry programme to carry out Human and Environmental Risk Assessments on ingredients of household cleaning products. A unique European partnership established in 1999 between the makers of household cleaning products (AISE) and the chemical industry (Cefic) who supplies the raw materials. more
heterogenous catalysis
In heterogenous catalysis, the reagents combine and transform at the interface between the gas or liquid and the surface of the catalyst. Compare with homogenous catalysis.
