In 2006 EU chemical industry exports outside the region were worth approximately €121 billion. Imports from outside the region amounted to some €80 billion. The balance was worth €40.6 billion. For the first time in three years the trade surplus in chemicals has increased again, back to levels of 2002, although imports increased at a higher pace than exports.
