Due to strengthening global competition, the EU chemical industry has taken vigorous restructuring and cost-saving steps in order to improve competitiveness over the last decade. As a consequence labour productivity in the chemical industry is growing faster than labour productivity in total industry: 3.9% and 2.4% average annual growth 1996-2006 respectively.
