ICCA / RCLG Chairman’s introduction

We, in the chemical industry, are on a mission to continuously improve our HS&E performance for the benefit of our workers, our communities, and our numerous other stakeholders. Responsible Care is the means by which we will accomplish this mission.

As participants in the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) Responsible Care Leadership Group (RCLG), we are collaborating to advance the status and stature of Responsible Care in our global community.

Our progress over the past two years gives us some satisfaction but we realize, however, that we still have a great deal of work to do. Currently, our fundamental challenges relate to the consistency, transparency, credibility and communication of Responsible Care. We intend to address these challenges directly. To do so, we are taking three fundamental steps.

Reviewing global consistency

We are monitoring the status of Responsible Care implementation around the world and encouraging refinements, where appropriate. We are developing a peer and public review process to foster thoughtful analysis of the various local activities and approaches used to implement Responsible Care.

Reviewing global performance

We are shifting our focus from increasing RCLG membership to achieving the full implementation of Responsible Care’s eight fundamental features in the countries where the initiative is embraced. We also have begun reviewing global performance indicators for the chemical industry as a means of strengthening the credibility of our activities and openly reporting our performance improvement.

Improving communications

We are improving our internal and external communications on Responsible Care. Our first line of dialogue is with internal stakeholders such as employees and their representatives, where we are pursuing a heightened commitment from companies around the world. This commitment will be critical in driving Responsible Care awareness and participation from company headquarters to the plant floor. We are striving for more effective dialogue about our industry’s progress with external stakeholders, such governmental and non-governmental organizations, and our plant communities. Finally, through use of the Internet and publications like this, we have set out to be more open and transparent with the general public.

I hope you will agree that, by our actions and improved dialogue, we are on the right track.
