    | Cefic Views | "Trade for All" Paper

    23 March 2016

    European chemical industry needs a strong and competitive advantage in order to remain a key exporting region in the world. This can only be achieved through three key policy areas:
    1. Competitive energy pricing by means of an effective single European energy market;
    2. A strong and determined commitment to better regulation and pro-innovation policies;
    3. A strong free trade commitment, focused on the removal of both tariff and ‘behind the border’ barriers to trade with all our (major) trading partners.

    [TTIP] Cefic intervention at TTIP Stakeholders event, 15 July 2015 Chemicals Regulatory Cooperation

    24 July 2015

    The European chemical industry considers TTIP as an opportunity for better regulatory cooperation. This doesn't mean that current legislation should be harmonised on both sides of the Atlantic: this topic will not be addressed under TTIP. In practice, REACH will NOT be open for discussion and the process of implementation will NOT be slowed down. Mutual recognition as such will not be possible because regulations differ too much.
    Our proposal is to achieve scientific cooperation that will ensure data assessment submitted in one region will be similarly accepted for its scientific relevance, so greater compatibility. Also that confidential business information and intellectual property rights will be appropriately considered. As an example, we need to explore where evaluation of risk assessment methods would concur with the aim of simplifying the burden for the authorities and industry. This would avoid duplication of efforts and would increase efficiency.

    Joint Cefic-JCIA statement on EU Japan Free Trade agreement

    25 June 2012

    EU Japan FreeTrade Agreement The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) and Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA) strongly support an ambitious and comprehensive trade agreement between the European Union and Japan. As an agreement between two advanced economies, it should go beyond WTO standards for free trade agreements to include “21st century” trade issues such as a framework for real and authentic regulatory cooperation and other potential non-tariff barriers. It should, moreover, serve as a precedent for future bilateral and multilateral negotiations.
