    EU chemicals output shrank by just 0.7% in the first four months of 2016 compared to one year ago, according to the latest Cefic Chemical Trends Report. Producer prices fell 3.8 per cent during the same period, while sales declined 3.1 per cent during the first quarter of 2016, compared to the same period of 2015. Capacity utilisation remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2016, much closer to its long-term average. Employment improved slightly in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the fourth quarter of 2015. The EU net trade surplus was €9.8 billion for the first quarter of 2016, up by €0.3 billion compared to the first quarter of 2015.

    EU chemicals output contracted by just 0.2% in the first quarter of 2016 compared to one year ago, according to the latest Cefic Chemical Trends Report. Producer prices fell 3.3 per cent during the same period, while sales declined 2.2 per cent during the first two months, compared to the same period of 2015. Capacity utilisation remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2016, much closer to its long-term average. No major positive changes in the EU chemicals business climate were recorded in the first quarter of 2016. However, the EU net trade surplus was €44.7 billion for the whole year 2015, up by €1.5 billion compared to 2014.

    the latest monthly Cefic Chemical Trends Report shows a mixed outlook. Falling sales – down 2.9 percent over the course of 2015 compared to 2014 - stack up against quarterly data showing slight growth in output of 0.6 per cent in Q4 2015 compared with Q4 2014. Meanwhile, EU chemicals prices plunged 5.1 per cent. Overall, European chemical output edged up just 0.3 per cent during 2015 compared to 2014, while producer prices fell 4.7 per cent, year-on-year.

    Chemicals output followed a flat trajectory: trade surplus up by €1.7 bn

    In its latest monthly chemicals trends report – rounding up data and insight on chemicals production, trade, prices and total sales – Cefic notes that while European chemicals production followed a flat trajectory, overall the trade surplus rose by €1.7bn while employment in the industry rose slightly, the second consecutive quarter of sector job growth*.

Sales were down 3.1 per cent during January-July 2015, compared to the same period of 2014. Latest monthly data show output growth of 0.3 per cent in July 2015 compared with July 2014, while EU chemicals prices plunged 3.0 per cent. The EU net trade surplus was €22.1 billion during the first half of 2015, up by €773 million compared to the same period one year ago.
