    According to the Ifo World Economic Survey (WES) “second quarter of 2017”, experts’ assessments of the current economic situation were considerably more positive, making their sharpest increase since January 2013. Economic expectations also improved. A further recovery was seen in the world economy in the second quarter. The ifo World Economic Climate improved in nearly all regions of the world. The main drivers remained the advanced economies, and especially the European Union.

    Global economy in an optimistic mood According to the latest Eurozone economic outlook report (April 6 th 2017), despite intensified political uncertainties and the upturn in inflation, the prospects for global economic activity have improved in recent months. Business surveys indicate an improvement in the near-term outlook. Furthermore, international trade is expected to continue to recover and to boost sales abroad during 2017 (Source: Ifo-Insee-Istat forecast Eurozone economic outlook, April, 6 th 2017).

    According to Ifo World Economic Survey (WES) “first quarter of 2017”; the Ifo World Economic Climate continued to improve this quarter. The indicator rose to +2.6 balance points from -1.2 points previously. Experts’ assessments of the current economic situation were no longer quite as unfavourable as last quarter. Expectations also brightened somewhat, pointing to a moderate recovery in the world economy.

    The world economic climate suffered a setback in Q3-2016. The index for the world economy reached its lowest level in three years, remaining below its long-term average. The business climate in the EU chemicals sector is still stable but lacking dynamics. EU chemicals output shrank by just 0.6% in the second quarter of 2016 compared to one year ago, according to the latest Cefic Chemical Trends Report. Producer prices fell 5.7 per cent during the same period. Declining prices and outputs continue to impact chemicals sales. Total sales in the EU chemicals sector went down by 5.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2016. EU chemicals exports fell by 5.0 per cent while imports shrank by 5.8 per cent during the same period. The EU had a €12.8 billion trade surplus in chemicals during the same period. At 81.5 per cent, capacity utilisation reached its long-term average in the second quarter of 2016.

    EU chemicals output shrank by just 0.7% in the first four months of 2016 compared to one year ago, according to the latest Cefic Chemical Trends Report. Producer prices fell 3.8 per cent during the same period, while sales declined 3.1 per cent during the first quarter of 2016, compared to the same period of 2015. Capacity utilisation remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2016, much closer to its long-term average. Employment improved slightly in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the fourth quarter of 2015. The EU net trade surplus was €9.8 billion for the first quarter of 2016, up by €0.3 billion compared to the first quarter of 2015.
