Uses and properties
Solvent borne resins are a main component of paints, coatings inks, adhesives and sealants. They contribute to a large extent to the properties of the paints, during application and after drying. They are used in many coating applications, like decorative coatings, vehicle refinish systems, furniture coatings, protective coatings, coatings for coils and cans, etc.
They can consist of many different kind of chemistries (like alkyds, acrylics, amino’s, polyesters, etc.), but also apply a wide variety of methods of film formation (2K systems, drying at elevated temperature, or at room temperature) and as such are very versatile compounds to bring the properties of the paint to the desired level.
The manufacturing of Solvent Borne Resins for coatings is usually done by means of batch processes
Joint SRM/PPRM Carbon Footprint Study
Commissioned by the Cefic associations PPRM (Polyester Powder Resin Manufacturers) and SRM (Solvent based Resin Manufacturers), Denkstatt GmbH Austria has performed a study with the goal to create reliable and credible average carbon footprint data (CFP) for a series of product families manufactured by the members of PPRM and SRM.
“Cradle to gate” carbon footprint averages were calculated for different grades of polyester resins, alkyd resins, acrylic resins, polyurethane resins and amino resins.
For the modelling the emphasis was placed on the raw materials, solvents, auxiliary materials, by-products and process data like energy, process specific emissions, waste and transport. For further information please contact Alice Salmon at Cefic.
