Dr. Gernot Klotz studied Biology and Microbiology at the University of Aachen (Germany). After having worked for the US based pharmaceutical company Armour he joined Bayer in various business sections (pharmaceutical, animal health and crop protection/product development). Within Bayer he later moved to the Corporate Environmental, Health and Quality Department (in charge of existing chemicals legislation, authorization of new products, strategic product developments). Following this he had responsibility to identify and frame global emerging political issues such as opportunities and barriers to innovation, policies on environment and health, animal welfare and other horizontal issues relevant to the competitiveness for the global Bayer Group.
Since February 2007 G. Klotz is the Executive Director for Research and Innovation for the European Chemical Industry (CEFIC). He is member of the CEFIC Leadership Team, which has the overall responsibility for coordinating and steering the activities of the organisation. Specific key areas of responsibility are innovation (technology development, innovation policies, societal acceptance of new technologies and products), emerging science-policy issues (Health and Environment) and the CEFIC Long Range Research Initiative (LRI) as well as managing the CEFIC Research and Innovation Board. He is also responsible for the EU Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry.
G. Klotz has been called on to various advisory and steering committees at OECD, WHO and EU Commission level in areas like innovation, technology development, testing and assessment, impact on environment on health and sensitive subpopulations.
